French Art Deco bookends, doves by ODYV c1930
Set of French Art Deco bookends in the shape of doves by ODYV, c1930.
In faience with marbled sandstone glaze and mauve tones.
Doves were a popular motif in Art Deco animalier art, represented by Cazeau, Catteau, Lemanceau and others. While we don’t know who designed these birds, their stylised elegance typifies Art Deco style. They are signed ODYV, a trademark used by the Berlot-Mussier pottery in Vierzon for its high-end decorative piece. The mark was used from 1929 to 1939, when the company’s success was at its height. Its fortunes gradually declined post-war.
