Art Deco cigarette box with 1920s flapper girl
An early Art Deco cigarette box depicting a ‘liberated’ flapper girl smoking a cigarette, c1920.
Versions of this box are usually seen pewter or tin but this is an unusual variation. It is made of heavy moulded plaster with the raised portrait of the woman in what appears to be ivory-coloured bakelite. The box is lacquered in gold with black lacquered ‘Japanese’ feet.
It measures approximately 5 inches x 5 inches / 13cm x 13cm and is 2.5 inches / 6.5cm high.
Condition is good. The box has an old repair at one corner of the lid, which is hardly noticeable.
A very decorative item of smoking memorabilia – and social history.
