Antique Spanish mermaid pitcher in polychrome pottery
Large antique Spanish mermaid pitcher in polychrome pottery c1890 made at the Fernando Amorós pottery in Biar, Spain.
This fine old majolica jug takes the form of a mermaid with creamy skin and a mass of wavy brown hair. She has a conch over one shoulder and a fish in the other hand.
Initialled F A for Fernando Amorós, a pottery founded in 1884 by wine merchant, Fernando Amorós Azorí. Amorós brought in expert craftsmen from Manises and later from France and Italy too. When the factory closed in the 1960s, some moulds were recovered by a the Maestre pottery in Biar and are still in production. This is an authentic old piece and quite distinct from the modern recreations.

In very good condition. Some minor wear, eg chafed nipples and one or two little nicks to the enamel nothing of significance. Wonderful piece with a great deal of presence.
