Rare French art pottery jug by Louis Lourioux, c1920
This is a superb French stoneware art pottery jug by the important French ceramist, Louis Lourioux (1874-1930).
Decorated with wild animals on green enamel background, it has an interesting glaze and a fluted lip, in echoes of French medieval pottery jugs. Lourioux is something of a ceramists’ ceramist. Noted for the originality of his glazes, his career straddled the Art Nouveau and Art Deco periods with style.
It is signed with the inked she-wolf signature, one of two signatures used by Lourioux.
