This is a wonderful antique French copper daubiere dating from the 19th century.
The copper is hammered and has old-fashioned dovetail seams, a technique that requires great skill and a great deal of time.
The three handles are iron with copper rivets.
The inside is brushed with tin and is well preserved and cared for.
Like all daubieres, it has a perfectly snug-fitting lid which still seals the pot hermetically for slow stewing.
Beautifully proportioned, it’s a rare find.
It measures 8 inches by 6 3/4 inches and is 6 inches high.

Printed before Metro line 12 was built and when suburbs like Aubervilliers were just leafy hamlets.
Still with its original smart hardback cover with embossed detail.

This antique salt glaze jar has a lovely warm honey glaze which contrasts with streaks of coppery-brown. It is a traditional hand-made item from the south-west of France, well over 100 years old, and totally authentic.
It was intended to contain oil or vinegar (which was every bit as precious for preserving and flavouring.) Originally, it would have had a cork – and if that’s what you have in mind, you’ll find a cork from a wine bottle fits perfectly. With its wide, flat bottom, it will never tip over and spill what’s inside.
Function aside, it’s a beautiful example of antique French salt-glazed ware, very decorative and nowadays very rare.
